Look No Further Than Next Door for Good Food and Fun in Uptown
Remember the old story about a boy who goes all over the world looking for the perfect girl only to find her back where he grew up, at the house next door? I don’t know if that’s how this lively bar/restaurant got its name, but it fits. This is a great place to find unexpectedly fine food at a place where you might not expect to find anything but a craft cocktail or beer.
My husband and I didn’t exactly fit the mold of the other customers, most of them college students or young professionals. But we had heard that Chef Paul Niekrasz (formerly with HG Sply Co) was in the kitchen, so we wanted to try the food. It’s available in bites, small plates and larger offerings.
My beef-loving husband was especially intrigued by the Loaded Bun Burger (Angus brisket/shortrib blend, bacon jam, arugula and a marinated tomato on a stuffed smoked gouda bun, plus bi fries). The sweet potato fries were especially delicious!
My favorite item was the shrimp cocktail shooter, featuring a large, plump shrimp in a shot glass filled with tangy cocktail sauce. I also found the tuna poke nachos to be exceptionally tasty.
Along with the experts in Next Door’s scratch kitchen, their mixologists take a lot of pride in carefully crafting new versions of cocktails. Their two most popular items are Pineapple Habanero Margarita and the notorious “Knocker.”
Special events at Next Door include a Ladies Night every Thursday, week night happy hours and a weekend brunch that sounds quite yummy. Featured dishes are smoked Prosciutto Benedict with a Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar. Ladies night features $1 glasses of bubbly, half-price mules and a DJ.
Located at 2908 McKinney Avenue, Next Door is owned by Sam Sameni, who owns restaurants and clubs in both Dallas and Fort Worth. There’s also a second floor party bar, Key Club, where DJs play dance music late into the night.
